Pros & Cons

  • The Work life balance and flexibility in working conditions. The senior managers are invested in getting results from their team. The line of work is focused on our capabilities, not the bottom line.
  • Degnan feels like an extended family. The crew is supportive and everyone wants to help and support progress.
  • The best thing about Degnan is how they treat their cadets with the cadet program. Throughout my time here I have felt very inclusive and have felt very comfortable going to my supervisor and mentor about questions. Not only that, even some of the colleagues that I don't work with are also happy to help which is amazing.
  • Inclusive team and I have gained exposure to various areas of work.
  • Very flexible work hours and days to be flexible around my time at Uni for my last year.
  • Career progression is slow from the Project Manager level upwards as it is a small company. Differing values between various teams within the business.
  • The systems are not as developed as some other companies. Opportunity outside of NSW and Rail is limited.
  • Limited resources
  • Tasks can be a little boring at times.
  • Travel isn't great at times but still very very good

Laid back company culture, flay hierarchy. Everyone is happy to come to work as all workers are treated with respect. This provides Degnan the benefit of having a large base of long-term employees, and employees who are happy to come to work. Teamwork is encouraged and knowledge is freely shared when teaching opportunities arise. Very dedicated group of senior engineers happy to lend their knowledge to those who want to listen. After hours, Degnan holds many functions on both a project and company wide level.

Degnan is very supportive of marginalised groups and to my knowledge there is no biases when hiring. Degnan are keen supporters of the women in construction movement. Degnan does this by having an inclusive attitude to people of all backgrounds which illustrates that the company does not discriminate any individual and is very inclusive.

My role as a cadet working underneath project managers, contract administrators and construction gives me an experience that covers all areas and provides excellent guidance.

Degnan's office space is large and is enjoyable to work in. The facilities are cleaned and well maintained. The company's dress code is smart casual.

When I was hired I completed 2 rounds of interviews with quick turn around. Was given the opportunity to meet my project manager during this process so I knew what I would be doing from the start. The questions which were asked were about my previous experience as an undergraduate as well as where I see myself and what I hope to learn at Degnan. I recommend they prepare by understanding the company values that Degnan has and if this aligns with their own fundamental values.

Pay is very good at the company whilst I am receiving training. Having a company car to take onto site is a good perk to have.
